You can now buy your gas and electricity from many different companies. All of them will claim to save you money. So how can you really know what is best for you?
The government set up an organisation called Energywatch to keep an eye on what prices they charge. They collect all this information and make it available to everyone free of charge. A neighbour or relative may be able to help you choose from the options available.

Now there are also a number of independent companies who will compare prices for you. This makes it easier for you as they do the hard work when comparing numbers. The government has approved four of them because they provide good information and only provide you with the best options for your situation. You will need access to your recent bills in order to give them an idea of how much you are spending at the moment.
